Leaving for SpainAugust 19, 2014
I’m at the point now where I just want the Vuelta a Espana to start already. All the training has been done and I am just waiting for the race to get started. It feels like there’s been a lot of anticipation. I leave for Spain today so I think it will become more real when we get there.
My role in the race will be to target one or two stages. Obviously it’s my first Grand Tour so my goal is to get to the end. It would be great to finish the race. I guess the point is to not think of the end but to set small goals and fight to finish the stage step by step.
There’s about 6 stages that could possibly be good for me but it all depends how the GC guys race on that day so there’s quite a few stages that I like, especially the one before the final time trail but I will have to see what my body feels like at that stage.
I’d like to feature in the race somehow and do something noteworthy. I am not sure if it’s a breakaway or attacking up a final climb, we will have to see but as a team we are very motivated to leave our mark on the race.
It’s great to take the SA jersey to the race because it’s the first ever Grand Tour for a South African registered team. I feel like I represent the country and it motivates me. The race will on TV in South Africa everyday too and throughout the African continent so that will motivate us.
I will do my best to keep you updated throughout the race so please sign up and subscribe to my blog posts if you’re interested in hearing what goes on behind the scenes with the team.
You will see Qhubeka very visible throughout the race, if you want to donate any amount, please click here.
