SA Champs and African Continental ChampionshipsFebruary 12, 2015
It has been good to be back in South Africa racing without arm warmers. The moment I landed and I went for a ride, I could tell that my legs weren’t so good though. My approach is a little different this season as I want to be stronger later in the season so it’s not always great starting racing not having good form. I was still happy to pick up a medal at SA Champs in the time trial though.
The road race didn’t go according to plan for me. I crashed and then tested the legs a bit on the climbs and they weren’t were I would have liked them to be. Jacques Janse van Rensburg had a super ride and he really deserved the jersey and will do it proud. He attacked from the gun and stayed away for the whole race. We were happy to keep the jersey in the team at the end of the day.
I’m at African Continental Championships at the moment. We had the time trial yesterday and the legs are finally starting to be friendly to me again. I thought I was flying on the TT course but it was only good enough for fourth. My old teammate Tsgabu Grmay had an incredible ride to win the gold medal. He is from Ethiopia and has always been talented so I am happy to see him doing so well at the Tour Down Under and now here.
We have the road race on Saturday which you will be able to watch online. They should have links on the Cycling SA website on Saturday. It will be a hard race and we will give it everything to win on home soil. From there I fly to Tour of Oman next week. We’ve never done the race as a team before and it will be a good test for me to see where my form is at. Things really only start to kick into gear after you do your first stage race of the season so let’s hope it goes well.
