Tour of Oman and Looking forwardMarch 4, 2014
It has been such a busy few weeks racing that I can’t even remember the off season. We started with a big training block in Mallorca. The temperatures were a little colder than we expected so when I got back to South Africa for the national championships, the heat was a shock to my system. By the time we got to African Champs, I had adapted though. We were very proud of the way we rode at African Champs as a national team. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to ride away but the team was just perfect that day. I think it’s something we will remember for a long time and I will cherish the gold medal.
From there I went to Tour of Oman where it was super hot too. It was definitely an advantage coming from the heat in South Africa. I was very happy that the legs showed up just in time for the race. It has boosted my confidence taking the young riders jersey against riders who have already achieved so much.
I hope the form will continue to go up as I have some pretty big races on my program for the next few weeks. My next race is Tirreno-Adriatico and I am looking forward to racing against the best GC guys to see where my level is. Every year I have been trying to step up a level and this will be my next test this season to see how far off I am from the top guys in the sport. It’s all about step by step growth and I must say the team has been very good with us in that regard with the young riders. Thanks as always for all the messages on Facebook and Twitter.
