Vuelta a Espana Update 1August 26, 2014
It has all started. We’re four days into the race now. Everything started with press conferences in the beginning which was a little tiring as we were staying 30min from where the conferences were held so we drove back and forth a few times. It was our introduction into a Grand Tour I guess and the media attention that comes with it.
The race of course started with a team time trial. The team did really well to finish 12th, beating some WorldTour competition. My legs felt good but I messed it up through one of the corners after doing a turn on the front and the guys were going so fast I couldn’t sprint back on. It was disappointing for me personally but I was very happy with the team’s overall result.
The first stage was a flat sprint. We looked after Gerald and my role was just to help the team a bit. It was a pretty uneventful stage.
Yesterday’s stage was super hot. The cat 3 climbs were so hard. If those were cat 3’s I don’t want to know what the cat 1’s and out of categories are going to be like. Overall I have been fully good. My job is to basically just save myself for the mountain stages. I am not here to go for GC so whenever a little group goes off the back in the last 10km’s I just stay with them. It’s so dangerous and technical in the finals, it’s not worth risking an accident in the sprints. It’s so easy to crash so I am taking it safe and easy.
In the mountains I will be playing two roles. Helping Sergio and looking for any moves that might stick. It’s been a good start for the team so thanks for all the support.
